Selecting a Gym or Health Club

Joining a gym for the first time? Not satisfied with your current health club? Selecting a gym or health club can be as mind-boggling as buying a new car. If you live in a medium-size community or larger, you're probably overwhelmed with choices. So how do you pick the right gym? Well, you wouldn't buy a car without shopping first and taking test drives, so to be prepared to visit prospective clubs and "test drive" each one before signing on the dotted line. Here are some helpful guidelines to assist you in making an informed decision.

Location

The more convenient your gym or health club is to get to, the more you'll use it. Decide when you are most likely to work out. Will you be working out on the way to or from work, on the weekend? How close is the gym to work or home, and how easily can you get there? If your gym is difficult to access, you'll be more likely to skip your workout.

Facilities and Amenities

What are the facilities like, and what type of equipment and classes are available? Are you looking for luxurious surroundings or simple and utilitarian? Does the club have men's and women's locker rooms, changing rooms, an showers -- some don't. These amenities are very important if you're working out on the way to your job or on your lunch hour.

Focus

What is the focus of the club? Is it primarily aimed at weight lifters, or is it filled with exercise machines without a free weight in sight? Decide on the focus of your exercise program. If you mainly want to use aerobic exercise machines such as stair steppers, bicycles, and treadmills, don't join a hard-core, iron-pumping club that lacks this equipment.

Crowd Control

How busy is the facility? How many members regularly use the club, and when are the busiest times? You won't want to go to a gym that is packed when you want to work out. On the other hand, if you have a flexible schedule and enjoy meeting people in the health club environment, pick a busy, popular gym.

Member Profile

What are the members like? Is the gym filled with senior citizens listening to the Big Bands of the '40s? Or is it packed with Generation X-ers with grunge rock and gangster rap blaring over the sound system? Do you want to socialize? Will you need child care services or other activities for kids? Join a club where you'll feel comfortable and welcome.

Staff

Does the facility have experienced staff and instructors? Are they knowledgeable about the equipment, training, and nutrition? Wearing a shirt with the facility's name on it doesn't mean guarantee any special ability, knowledge, or training. Look for staff members who are friendly and competent.

Cost

Finally, how much does it cost? Does the club have a big initiation fee with large monthly payments? Do you have to sign a contract, or can you join on a month-to-month basis? Competition can sometimews determine the cost. Be sure to look for advertised specials and coupons. Always ask if there are any special discounted membership packages available.

Now that you know what to look for, jump in and start test driving those prospective gyms.
